Odette froze atop the horse. The barest trace of dawn was peeking over the horizon, but it couldn’t come fast enough for Odette. She knew the stone structure atop the next hill. Not the palace, not Siegfried.
Olaf sensed her panic. “You’ve figured it out, haven’t you? You know my name isn’t Olaf. It’s the same as my father. Siegfried.”
Falling from the saddle, Odette tried to run in her useless slippers back to the lake, to Anna. She tripped and fell before more than a few steps.
Siegfried didn’t try to stop her, and when she met his gaze she saw the hurt in his downturned mouth and brow, an expression that quickly disappeared.
Shifting her weight on webbed feet, she waited for his reaction. The shock was obvious, but then he let out a laugh. “You are as graceful as a swan!”
She honked a reply, one he wouldn’t be able to comprehend.
