After receiving a letter from an aunt she never knew existed, Kyna Hughes travels to Ireland only to find out that her whole life has been a series of well-orchestrated lies. Suddenly, this poor girl from the foothills of the Alleghany Mountains is thrust into a life of not only the wealthy and affluent, but of dark magic and secret societies. As Kyna learns of the magic hidden inside her, purposefully stunted as she grew up for her protection, she must now battle mystical hauntings which are the result of curses while getting a crash course in utilizing her powers. Kidnappings and satanic weddings become her daily events as she struggles not to lose her heart to one of two men—a former Navy SEAL hired to protect her or a wizard hired to train her. Soon she will realize just how true it is that “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
Ominous fanfare greeted her arrival in County Monaghan. Lightning shred the fall of dusk as a grisly storm surrounded the car. Her every nerve vibrated with electricity; the well read letter in her hand trembling in the heat of her clenched fist. Her last minute research of this part of Northern Ireland had not done the place justice. Beauty, that of a rolling and majestic nature even in the dark downpour, stole her already shallow breath.
The thousand slices of light tearing through the sky reflected in the grey water beside the road. Kyna perceived the ominous black shadows cast by the trees as decrepit, arthritic fingers reaching out for her from the heavy flowing stream. A resounding flood of sound, deep undulating thunder, made her curl her body in on itself as she angled away from the window streaming with tears from the sky. The squall so violent, she imagined the glass would shatter. Never one to cower, she swore in a whisper to herself. Ever since she’d landed in Ireland, someone or a something, specifically an indescribable dark presence, followed her. Sure, it made no sense, but she couldn’t convince her over-stimulated brain and racing heart.
Trying to swallow despite the dryness in her mouth, looking straight ahead, her gaze following the peaks and valleys of the deserted stretch of road, she sought a moment’s peace from the raging internal war. Deep breathing exercises had yet to award her tranquility. This unexpected twist in her life over the past few days propelled her toward her wits end. From the moment she’d pulled the cream-colored, gold-trimmed envelope containing the correspondence from her mailbox, every part of her being had been altered in some way. From bursts of indefinable energy making her want to run a marathon, to unbidden ideas reminiscent of familiar dreams, to a feeling of having a sixth sense that warned of impending danger, she warred within to maintain some semblance of composure. She didn’t understand her own body anymore, but had not the time or the mental capacity to analyze the abrupt changes as she traveled.
Erratic thought patterns plagued her instead, a barrage of unanswered questions. Prior to that fateful letter, she’d just been a girl from the foothills of the Alleghany Mountains, having lived her whole life in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia. Her mother’s confession of her true heritage came when confronted with the communication, the damned letter, scrolled in a shaky hand, from an aunt from Ireland she never knew existed.
Apparently, Kyna was more Irish than she knew, as in born in Ireland and adopted through the Irish Mafia into the United States. The father she barely remembered, a man who’d died in a mining accident when she’d been barely five years old, had ties to the organization. She’d been a black market baby, for the love of all that is holy! The adoption had born conditions. Telling the poor child of her adoption a deal breaker, punishable by death. None of these random facts brought about feelings of safety and security as she traveled abroad to meet her aunt on her biological mother’s side.
The letter, the freaking destroy-a-simple-life letter, ranted on for two pages of a heartbreaking tale.

#CimmerianShade ~ Kharma Kelley @kharmakelley #vampire #demon #witch #supernatural #slayer

Get ready for 22 doses of hot, heart-pumping romance from the darkside with heroes and heroines to keep you turning the pages! Grab this 24-author set now for only 99 pennies! This is a limited edition, and the steal-of-a-price is for a limited time featuring stories from award winning, bestselling authors.

For your reading pleasure, we'll be featuring each author with a story of her choice for the next few weeks. Some will include interviews, and all will include excerpts. Today's featured author is Kharma Kelley.

1.   When did you start writing?
I’ve enjoyed writing for many moons; since I was a kid. But I didn’t start writing seriously till I was a teenager. I wrote my 1st screenplay in Jr. High and my first vampire romance too.  I read my vampire romance recently and it was terrible! Just trite dialogue and plot holes, but hey, you gotta start somewhere, right? Fast forward into adulthood, I used to find excuses on why I couldn’t write. Always excuses…the sins of being a grown-up. Always think you have more time, right?  When my brother suddenly passed away (also a writer—but with no excuses), I got inspired to complete my stories and stop making excuses. That was 2 years ago and the one positive thing from losing someone so dear to me. Now with 4 completed books, I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon! I love to write, because I’m a storyteller. You can ask anyone and they’d tell you.  Water cooler talks ain’t got nothing on me ;)

2.   What makes your stories unique?
Coming from a household and family that’s male majority, I love featuring strong female characters to support the hero. She’s fallible, real and may not always have the right motive, but she can make her own way.  It’s a big deal to me since I grew up in a feminist household (believe it or not) There’s a partnership in the best romance stories. When you take two people and have them compliment each other, that’s when you’ve got a good thing in the works.  My heroine can’t be strong all the time—that’s when she needs her man to run interference ;)  I think you’ll get a lot of that in my stories. Lots of voids being filled! (that probably came out wrong!)

3.   Is there a common thread that runs through your books?
Being different would be my most common theme in my current stories and in thinking about it; I guess it says a thing or two about me.  I’ve always been a bit different and the best compliment I ever get from my friends is that I take people as they are.  Acceptance (though we don’t like to admit it) is a great feeling. It really matters to us when the people we care about don’t see us in the light we want to be seen in. And in a world where being different is soooo hard, there’s always a story there.  My characters will always be a “freak among the freaks”. Someone a bit off and trying to find their own piece of happiness in a tough world that I create that challenges them to embrace that difference.  Or better yet, their love interest accepting that unique spirit. I hope my readers don’t get tired of that!

4.   If money was of no concern, what would you envision as your perfect lifestyle?
Ah…I could see it now.   I’m watching the crystal clear water rush up and crash little cool waves against my feet.  My toes rub across the white sands as I sit under my palapa. In my hand is my Kindle. To my left is my laptop when I get the need to write. Time for another drinky-poo. Where is that cabana boy, I mean, my hubby? I look for a watch, but none exists. What time is it? Who cares? There’s no schedule to keep. Time doesn’t matter here.  What matters is that the sun is warm, the sky is always blue and the Bahama Mamas never stop flowing! Eh, life is good.

5.   Besides writing, what things are you most passionate about?
I’m a HUGE Minecraft fan (if you’re on Xbox, let a girl know) I adore photography and have my wedding photography business on hiatus as I write.  Of course, cooking is a big passion of mine and happy to share some recipes for the foodies out there. I get bored easily, so I have knitting, painting and guitar to mix it up. Polymaths are annoying af, I know!

6.   Not limited to writing, what do you believe to be some of your greatest accomplishments so far?
I would say that my biggest accomplishment is my entrepreneurship.  I love running a business and having the independence to shape the course of it. I can’t say that all of it has gone off without a hitch, but it is those events that made me tougher and ready to face the bigger challenges.  That and publishing my 1st book…those two things felt more awesome than anyone could imagine.

7.   Name a few of your favorites
·     Favorite color is Purple
·     Always Sunny is my go-to show
·     Horror & Sci-Fi are my favorite movie genres
·     I could probably kick your butt in any film trivia (yes, that’s a challenge)
·     My theme song right now is “Can’t Get Enough of Myself” by Santigold
·     My celebrity boyfriend(s) are Idris Elba and Alexander Dreymon.
·     My celebrity girl crush is Natalie Dormer

Half-human. Half-vampire. 100% Badass

He motioned to the kitchen. "Are you thirsty?"
Chloë nodded, "Yes, thanks. You should let me be the judge of whether you're interesting or not. C'mon, let's get some fun fact time in. Let me ask you three questions and we'll see what happens."
He groaned in dismay. "I have a feeling this will end badly. I’d rather not."
His uneasiness made her even more intrigued. Just what did he think she was going to ask him? He might not have thought it, but he was interesting. If there was a water cooler in the office, he would be the main topic around it every day. Almost everyone in the district had wondered something about him, and the most they churned about was hearsay and rumors. Having this type of access to him appeared to give her a sort of divine right to find out more about him.
Ethan came back to the sofa with a couple of mugs and handed her one. She felt the warmth of the mug and smiled to herself. He nuked the blood for me. He's so cute, I just wanna punch him in the face! As he sat down next to her, she noticed what his mug read and then looked at hers and smiled. She recognized them almost immediately.
"Oh my gods, I can't believe you still have these!" Chloë held up her mug and pointed to BITE ME written with an image of a bite mark on the edge of the mug.
"Why not? They're good mugs." He held up his in a cheers gesture, showing off the BEST BOSS EVER written on his. Chloë had given the two mugs to him last Christmas. They were definitely a gag gift and tacky as hell, but, nevertheless, he couldn't bring himself to throw them out. It had been the first time he’d seen the warmer side of her he’d known she kept hidden from everyone else. Every time Chloë laughed, a piece of him lit up inside. She was infectious, and it felt bizarre yet comforting to have her in his home, curled up on his sofa. He wasn't used to company, but she seemed to fit right in. He took a sip of warm blood from his mug.
"Okay, Hunter. I'll give in because you came clean with me earlier. Three questions about me and I'll answer. That's it."
Chloë scooted to the edge of the sofa, eager to ring off her first question. "Sooo, how old are you really?"
Here we go. Ethan leaned back, "How old do you think I am?"
"Uh-uh." Chloë wagged her finger. "You don't get to turn this into a guessing game. We're talking honest, straight up answers here, boss."
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you." He hated to talk age because it often led down a rabbit hole into other questions that could give suspicion as to what he really was. But with a three-question limit, he doubted he was at risk this time.
Chloë sipped from her mug and shrugged. "Try me. 500? 800?"
"Three."
Chloë cocked her head in confusion. "That's all, 300? Ethan, that's not—"
"Three...thousand."

#MidWeekTease more from Swan Lake

I want to thank all you teasers for coming by my blog last week. In a rut, getting some boosts from my friends really hit the spot. This week, I'm out of town so I'll probably be a bit late getting to yours, but hopefully by the weekend. *fingers crossed*

Until then, here's another excerpt from Swan Lake, something a little spicier. If you remember Anna, her is her and Vlad for you:

A roar came from the bedroom, followed by feminine squeals.
“To hell with them.” He planted his lips on Anna, sliding his hands around her waist, under her plump rear. He squeezed and relished the quick squeak that resulted.
“You, Vlad, can distract me any time.” More noise came from the other couple. “Now would be perfect, actually.”
Warmth filled his belly and blood rushed lower, first at the welcome he received and then the feel of the soft woman in her arms. He chuckled and nuzzled her ear, sucking down her neck. “As you wish.”
The closeness increased as his hand slid up her ribs to cup her breast. Fingers splayed, he couldn’t quite cover it, but with a little shifting, tugging, he pulled her dress down until her nipple popped free. His was enjoying her neck too much to jump over to it, rolling it between his thumb and finger instead. He nipped and sucked along her jaw, kissed her cheek and was about to claim her lips again when she stopped him.
“I don’t know what to do.” Her hands had wandered from his neck to his chest, and back to his shoulders. Though perhaps not as intimate as his fondling, it still had him breathing heavily.
“You are doing fine.” His lips brushed against hers as he spoke. He couldn’t ask her to reach into his pants, not after her last declaration, but he did want her to touch him more. “You might lift my shirt.” Rather than allow her to argue, he seized her lips, drawing her into a deep kiss. His tongue slipped out sweeping until her mouth opened to him. Plunging in, he squeezed her bottom, still in one hand and pinched her nipple in the other. Her shriek made his blood boil.
After a few moments, she acted on his suggestion. Tugging, she pulled the fabric free and ran her fingers over his skin, through his chest hair. Her nails scratched lightly, leaving fire in their wake.
She lifted her hips out of his hand. He worried a moment, but then she tried to rub herself on him. He could think of nothing he wanted so badly. Putting more heat into his kisses, he probed her mouth, sucked her lip up between his teeth until her tongue fought his, putting her own heat into their efforts.
“More?” he asked, shifting his hand from her breast to her hip, bunching up her skirt. It was thin, though not filmy. It was simple to gather it.
“Yes, yes please.”

1.   What makes your stories unique?
As with any author, creativity comes in plot and characters. I think what makes mine different is I don't put things together like other people…
Example: Elves and Orgasm curses.
Who thinks up these things?
Oh right- me. 😊

I'm extremely passionate about family, but I'm sure you expected that. What you might not expect is I'm also passionate about editing (my day job) and crafting.

Torren is days away from competing in the Draconic Challenge and earning the prize he needs to complete his magic credence. His sky-high dream of apprenticing with the Ancients is finally in sight. The last thing this solitary moon dragon needs is a mate dragging him down to earth, and a human one at that. Not that his body will listen. Dovie is minding her own business—literally—when a handsome stranger walks into her bookstore.

One spontaneous orgasm later, she’s left with no choice but to close up shop. The last thing she needs is an overbearing dragon dragging her to his mountain and telling her to shelve her dreams in favor of a stupid contest. Not that her body will listen.
Torren and Dovie must fight their treacherous attraction to each other or sacrifice their ambitions forever. But moon dragon magic doesn’t choose lightly, and when darker forces shatter the peaceful mountain enclave the dragons call home, human and moon dragon alike will have to reconsider just what they need to achieve a happy ending.
Without thinking too hard on it, she reached up a shaking hand. Would his skin feel like a human’s or a reptile’s? When her flesh met his cheek, it was surprisingly warm and soft, human. His skin shimmered again with yellow brown scales, like a ripple of water, and then it was gone. Electricity shot up her arm.
Dovie jerked her hand back. The current sizzled straight to her core, heating her entire body, and she fell to her knees, moaning. Her eyes rolled to the back of her head as a lash of energy continuously lapped between her legs until it crested on the wave of a spontaneous orgasm. It crashed over her, curling her toes as the spasm slowed. Her breath came in short gasps and her hands shook as they held her up on the floor.
What the fuck was that?
“I think you need to come with me, Dovie.” The moon dragon had knelt down beside her. He didn’t try to help her up and she decided that was perfectly fine. She had no idea what had just happened, and until she did, she wasn’t sure touching him was a good idea. Her body had reacted to him, dramatically. She had no control and that scared the crap out of her.
Still in shock, she sat up. She wobbled as she stood, holding her arms out for balance. Once she found it, she gathered the nerve to look at him again. “I’m not sure I should.” She met his eyes. They hooded over with what she assumed was either desire or anger. He had a death grip on the book, his knuckles white. “I don’t even know your name.”
“Torren, and the choice isn’t exactly yours to make anymore, Duv.”

#CimmerianShade ~ Kallysten @kallysten #vampire #magic #demons #secret #apocalyptic #heartbreak #familybond #lgbt

Two vampires and a little boy. Two dads and their son. One family.
A child’s birth. His first teeth and first steps. School friends and bullies, recess, school plays and science projects. A girl, a crush and a broken heart. These childhood experiences are shared by countless little boys from different horizons.

And yet… Jacob is anything but average. For as long as he has been able to understand, a secret has shaped his life, kept even from his closest friends: his father, Andrew, is a vampire. And so is his other father, Nicholas.

Two fathers raising a son neither of them ever thought he would have. A Sire and Childe resuming their relationship after years of estrangement. Through snapshots covering Jacob’s life from birth to adulthood, discover this unusual family, and how, in the end, all it takes is love.

In a strange era when demons are beginning to appear all over the world and threaten humans and vampires alike, the three of them form quite an extraordinary family. And yet, at the same time, they could hardly be more normal.
“Explain yourself,” Andrew demanded, barely managing to keep the growl out of his words. “Explain how you could do something so stupid and put all of us in danger.”
This time, when Jacob looked up at them, he didn’t wince again. Instead, he frowned. “Danger?” he repeated. “What danger? You think she’s going to try and stake you?”
“No, I think she could talk. Tell all her friends about this. And one of your teachers might hear about it. Report us to social services. And when they stake Nicholas and me for kidnapping a child, because vamps can’t have kids and can’t adopt or foster children either, you can tell me again that there’s no danger.”
Eyes wide and incredulous, Jacob shook his head. “She’s not going to tell anyone. She promised.”
“So did you,” Nicholas snapped. “So why in hell would you break that promise?”
“Because I love her,” Jacob said, quietly but with no hesitation. He was looking down again, his gaze fixed on his hands, linked together in front of him. “Because I’ve been lying to all my friends for as long as I’ve had friends, and I just…” He sighed, looked up at Andrew, then Nicholas, eyes pleading for them to understand. “I needed someone to know. I needed just one person to talk to about it. About what it’s like to pretend I’m not what I am. Or what it’s like to train with you. Or…”  Jacob swallowed hard. “I just needed her to know. So when she tells me she loves me, I can believe her instead of thinking she’s in love with a lie.”
Andrew opened his mouth—and closed it again without a word. He was still mad at Jacob, but he had heard a pain in Jacob’s voice that he had never before suspected was there. It tore at his heart like Jacob’s tears always had, and—like always—Andrew would have done anything to soothe his son’s pain. But this time, there was nothing Andrew could do. This time, Andrew was part of the problem, and not the solution.
“So what?” Nicholas asked, words sharp as fangs. “Every time you fall for a girl, you’re going to tell her? Wait a minute. Did you tell your girlfriends before her?”
“No!” Jacob shook his head emphatically. “Of course not. I never told anyone else. She was the first. And maybe she’ll be the last. I love her, Dad. I’ll always love her.”
Jacob’s gaze flickered between Nicholas and Andrew as he said it, and that ‘dad’ could have been either of them, or maybe it was both, but Andrew still felt removed from the discussion.
“You’re six-fucking-teen! You’ve had three girlfriends in the last three years! Don’t fucking tell me that you’ll always—”
“You know what, Dad?” The feet of the chair scraped the floor when Jacob abruptly stood. “You’ve been in love with the same person for a hundred years. So if you tell me love doesn’t last, I’m going to laugh in your face. Really hard.”

The beeping sound of the machines brought her back to consciousness. Joanie shifted, annoyed at the scratchiness of the sheets and batted at an errant strand of hair that had fallen in her face. Her body hurt. The scent of bleach assaulted her nose and the pain in her foot still throbbed, a steady prickly feeling that seemed to lurk just beneath her skin.
Something was off. She felt around for Schubert’s familiar warmth and found him missing. Her body slick with sweat, she groaned as her head swam from the slight movement.
She’d heard voices earlier. It made it hard to sleep when they kept coming in and out of the room. The prick of a needle in her arm, the pressure from hands moving her into a bed. It was all a blur.
Wait.
Beeping.
Scratchy sheets and that weird chemical smell…
Joanie’s eyes popped open and grew wider. Everything was a blah shade of faded white and dingy beige that might have been something not the color of used putty once upon a time. Maybe. The only color in the room was the powder blue curtain that hung from the track in the ceiling between her bed and the one next door.
Someone was there and by the sound of it, they were sleeping. The snores got louder and tapered off, only to resume once more. Shifting beneath the sheets she grimaced at the discomfort thrumming through her body.
A nurse bustled in and, upon seeing her awake, smiled.
“Good. You’re up.” Her badge read “Nina Barticolva” and she reminded Joanie of one of the Gibson girls the way her cheeks turned round when she smiled.
Joanie tried to sit but the IV in her arm yanked her back into a supine position. “Ouch.” The sudden movement made her tired, her head still woozy from whatever happened to bring her here.
Why couldn’t she remember?
She was out on a rescue mission with Tim… then it all faded to nothing and, when she tried to bring it back, her head hurt.
“Woo,” Nina winced. “I wouldn’t do that just yet. We’re about to move you, but the doctor wants to have a look at you first.”
“Um. Okay.” Her head swam.
“I want to get your vitals.” The nurse put the stethoscope into her ears and placed the cold end of it on Joanie’s chest. Giving her a nod, she removed the device and looped it around her neck. Pulling a small device from her pocket, she clipped it on Joanie’s finger. It squeezed over the end of the digit and Joanie watched the small screen as numbers raced across it.
“What’s that?”
“I need your body temperature,” Nina replied with a smile.
“Oh.” Joanie’s head was pounding and her skin felt hot all over. “Why are you moving me…” she started to ask, but the words faded away as she caught sight of the doctor.
A man in green scrubs came through the door, his presence taking the air from the room. Joanie gasped, his piercing eyes meeting hers. The prickling feeling plaguing her ramped up, leaving her hyper aware of the male as he approached.
Her nose itched and she sneezed, a funny itching sensation covering her skin.
His chiseled features were strong and his dark eyes held oceans of blue, like a tempest in a storm. A strand or two of his dark hair fell down over his forehead and he absently ran his fingers through it to put it to rights. His muscular frame flexed beneath the scrubs and for a moment she wondered if he would mind if she reached out and touched him.
“You must be Joanie. Hi. I’m Dr. Buchanan.” His full lips turned up in a smile.
A burst of heat slammed into her gut and she moaned aloud. An internal image of a female wolf reared her head, taking notice of the doctor in a big way. She was separate from Joanie, but connected to her at the same time, their desires co-mingling.
Mortified, she clapped her free hand to her mouth and lowered her head.

“Paige, where in the hell did you put the password log book?” Sylvia groaned as she flicked on the computer and the logo for the Shifting Hearts Dating Agency flashed across the screen. The agency had been open for six months, growing a little more every day. Their wall of successful matings and marriages increasing making Sylvia eager to check out her newest applicants and see any potential matches. But she always forgot the password. Either that, or Paige was always changing it.
She bet the latter.
Tricky damned cat shifter.
A descendent of Aphrodite, helping others find love was in Sylvia’s blood. Nothing made her happier. One day she’d find her own swoon-worthy prince charming, but at this point…well, she was content helping others. A tinge of sadness slid in and she firmly booted it away. The right person would come along at the right time, not before. This was her job, her chosen career and damned if she wasn’t going to use her power for helping people. With a push if it required it.
But if she saw that damned incubus, Carter, again, she was going to shove his ass clear out the window. Cheating fucker. He’d get his one day. She had people to help and it didn’t do her much good to think about murder before she’d at least had a cup of coffee. A really big cup too.
Everything here in Cypress Valley, Texas ran toward big and she hoped by setting up business here with the growing shifter population, her profits would start to be too. It was all great being descended from Goddess material, but if you didn’t have the dollars to go with the lifestyle, then it wasn’t so much fun anymore. Time to shake her money maker and get some romance in the air.
She got up from the desk, her new heels making her wince. She hobbled over to the kitchenette area in the back of the office and flicked on the overpriced individual cup coffee maker Paige insisted they buy. Her co-partner stood next to the counter, stuffing the better part of a jumbo blueberry muffin into her mouth.
“Now that is one big muffin.”
She held up a finger and kept on chewing.
“Nice salute there, hun. Cat get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?”
Paige growled around the muffin, her cat shining in her eyes.
“Ewwww. Somebody is grumpy today.” Sylvia rolled her eyes and shook her head. Coffee. Lots of coffee. Then she’d deliberate about food. And passwords. She eyed the flavored pods with distrust, knowing Paige was watching, and selected one that read Hazelnut. She popped it into place like Paige had shown her and hit the start button. A dribble of brown liquid began to flow from the machine and too late she remembered she hadn’t placed a cup below the spigot.
“Shit!” Sylvia scrambled and reached for the nearest mug, shoving it in place. The scalding hot liquid poured over her hand and she let out a yowl.
A choked laugh from across the kitchenette met her ears.
Still munching on her muffin with an innocent smile on her face, Paige grinned and gave a pinky wave.
Bitch. At least that was an improvement over the last finger, she supposed.
Sylvia gazed at her friend with narrowed eyes and ran her hand under the faucet. “That wasn’t nice.”
“Sorry. But you made me almost inhale that one.” Paige snorted into her hand and popped the last of the muffin into her mouth. Not afraid of sporting her brunette curves, Paige was a kitty to be reckoned with, whether it was man or muffin…or modern appliance.
“Ugh.” Sylvia snatched up her cup and marched back to her desk, irritation prickling under her skin. New machines wigged her out. So did computers and newfangled cars. If she got too excited, her goddess tendencies could have adverse side effects to the point where Paige teased her that she must be related to Harry Dresden. At her blank look, she’d sighed and flicked something up on her phone, twisting it so Sylvia could see. “You know. The Dresden Files?” A picture of a book cover covered the screen.
She’d had no earthly idea what her friend was talking about. If it didn’t have vampires or a hot scantily clad shifter, she didn’t bother.
“You need to read more than just smut, girl.”
“Yeah…yeah.”
But what was the point to that?
“Sorry, Syl. The password book’s in the drawer where I always leave it.” Paige maneuvered her way to the desk on heels so high Sylvia didn’t know how she didn’t fall on her impeccably made up face. “And unless you plan on sticking your mouth underneath the pour nozzle, I’d have a cup ready next time.”
“Ha ha.”
Her friend’s blazer and top worked well with the jeans and boots she’d selected for the day. It was raining and knowing her cat shifter partner, she’d rather be curled up in her bed with a pile of blankets than be out and about.
Paige clutched an oversize cup of coffee like it was her lifeline, pausing mid-stride to take a sip. The rest of her may have been spot on but her bleary eyes told a story. Sylvia wasn’t sure she really wanted to ask.
“You okay?”
“Yep.” Paige set the cup down, the milky brown liquid sloshing dangerously close to the rim. “Tried out a new venue last night and I think I found us a whole new segment of the shifter population.”
“Really?” Sylvia grinned, “And where did you go, pray tell?”
Paige glanced around, nibbling her lip. “Is Rafe here?”
“Nope. I haven’t seen your brother yet. Why?”
“Good.” A flash of cat in Paige’s eyes revealed her excitement. “I went to Ventures.”
Sylvia wrinkled her nose. “Where?”
“The new bondage club on Fifth Street. It caters to humans, shifters, and other paranormals.” A smile lit up her eyes and she reached for the coffee again, sitting down with a wince. “They had a kind of open house event and I wanted to check it out to see if there was any potential for us to join forces.”
“And?”
Paige focused on her cup, a secret smile on her lips.
“Did you hurt yourself?”
“Not exactly.”
Sylvia blinked. Oh….So that was how it was.
“So you think we’ll get some clients?”
Paige fidgeted in her chair and fired up her own computer. “You just wait, girlfriend. I have a feeling before the day is out we’ll be seeing something new coming across our desk. Now, where did you put the file on the Jefferson twins? I think I met someone that could give them a run for their money.”

#CimmerianShade ~ Red L. Jameson @RedLJameson #PTSD #navySEAL #valkyrie #Norsemyth #angel #soulmates #love

Today's featured author is Red L. Jameson.
1.   When did you start writing?
Before I could write real words. I used to make “books” from paper and construction paper, held together with glue or yarn, and scribble my stories, which would invariably change, since I wasn’t writing real words.

2.   What makes your stories unique?
For every story, I want to wrench as much emotion as I can from the characters and the plot. I want my readers to laugh, cry, and most importantly to fall in love.

3.   Is there a common thread that runs through your books?
Perseverance. Love is many things—great and splendid. But my characters are all gritty and raw and will persevere through whatever life (or me, actually) will throw at them.

4.   If money was of no concern, what would you envision as your perfect lifestyle?
I love my life with my family and pets, and right now I have a garden that makes me so happy. That said, if money was just rolling in, I would love to quit my day job—as an editor, buy horribly expensive cars and trucks, and spoil my loved ones with everything they’ve ever wanted.

5.   Name a few of your favorites
I binge watch Orange is the New Black and House of Cards. I’m obsessed with Game of Thrones, but only the HBO series, not the books—sorry! I adore Alexis Hall’s writing and can’t get enough of his books. I never can pick a favorite color because I love so many—namely blue, green and red. And I love summer days next to some kind of water—river or lake or ocean—with my family.

Talk about a killer kiss…

Being a former soldier with PTSD takes its toll on Aaron and has wiped him clean of optimism along with having dreams. But he’s no longer sure if he’s living in reality or fantasy after he tries to save a friend and finds his world filled with women who have wings and…Valkyries.

Adala kills. Not on purpose. She’s a Valkyrie—from just one touch, she takes warriors to the afterlife. Oh, but she’d give anything for a break, for normalcy, to have one day of not wearing her legionnaire uniform. When she’s asked to talk to the human Aaron to help him understand just what he’s in for when he tripped into her world, she jumps at the chance, even though she knows Aaron more than she cares to admit, even though she has an insane crush on him, even though she can’t touch him at all. But she gets to wear jeans and talk to a man—a real-life, hero of a man.

From her adorable made-up swearwords to when she wears his clothes, from the fact that she’s hundreds of years old to her pet Pegasus, Aaron falls hard for the shy Valkyrie. Dare he risk his life for a kiss? He’s thinking about it, because already he’s given her his heart

With This Heart is a standalone story, that’s part of the With These Wings Series—books that mix rock-hard military men with feathered-fantasy femme fatales for a sizzling hot adventure to find love. Join Chanticleer winner, Red L. Jameson, for more of this heart-tugging fairy tale series

“Jesus, in one day you’ve been shot and burnt by me.” He ran a hand through his hair, swallowing as he watched the angry red dots of skin turn back to glowing flesh. “Oh, wow.”

“It’s okay.” She wiped a little more at one of her legs. “See? I’m all better now.”

He straightened looking down at her. She was tall, only about four inches shorter than him, and he liked that. Way too much.

“Yeah, but I never want to hurt you.”

She tilted her head like she’d never heard anyone speak those words together and wasn’t sure what they meant. She looked confused and a dark edge of panic raced through her eyes.

He stepped back, giving her space. “I’m really sorry. Jesus, I’m making the worst first impression.”

“No.” She looked down at the creamy kitchen tiles. “I’m probably making you nervous.” She softly laughed. “I forgot I’m wearing this.” Glancing up, she touched the leather and brass armor snug around her thin hips. “I look like a loon. I act like a loon—”

“No.”

“It’s no wonder you…I’m making you nervous, aren’t I?”

He shook his head. His nerves weren’t from her outfit, although they should have been. And he wasn’t acting like a teenager, all jerky movements and clumsy, because she was a Valkyrie with a longsword strapped to her back. Those things should have freaked him the hell out.

It was her—her scent, her voice, her hazel eyes that held so much fear yet seemed to see straight into him that had him acting fidgety.
He sucked in a breath. “You want a change of clothes?”

She blinked, a delicate pink blooming in her cheeks, neck, the small portion of her chest he could see.

He took another step back and looked at the sauce, flinching when he saw the noodles and took them off the burner. Glad to be busy doing something as he drained the pasta, he said, “I mean, I have sweats you could borrow, get comfortable in.”

She didn’t say anything for a long moment, but finally whispered, “That’s very nice of you. I’d like that.”

“I’ll, ah, get dinner ready while you change.”

#MidWeekTease Swan Lake

Got my copy back from my beta reader (shout out to Linda Hamonou) and I think I've got the story nailed down enough to take it to edits. Yay! Here's a scene from a later draft. Poor Odette.

When the moon reflected off the still water, it emphasized the difference between Odette, on the pool’s edge, and the party roaring inside.
Anger supplanted grief and she rose, setting her mask in place. Safe behind her disguise, she marched into the palace. No one barred her entry.
She stormed past dancing couples, past the table still heavy with food, and straight to the bed she had shared with Siegfried.
“Stop!”
The command halted her, hand on the doorknob. She turned slowly and faced Baron von Rothbert.
“You know you’ve lost him.”
Her rage dimmed slightly, a wave of sorrow washing out its flames. “Yes. It’s time he saw what he lost.”
The Baron covered her hand with his own. “He can’t. He believes that Odile is you and nothing will change that.”
She pulled her hand free, crossing her arms. “That may be, but he will face losing us both. I will kill her.”
The baron laughed. “You are a vapid girl, low-born and common. Did you really think he could step down so far as to marry you?”
“If he believes she is me, he did.”
“Oh, yes, he is infatuated with you, but the king knows who he wed.”
“You. You did this to me, to Anna!”
The Baron backed away. “I never meant for the Baroness to get caught in this. If you’d stayed where you belonged, like your mother, none of this would have been necessary.”
“I am nothing like my mother.” The words sprayed amid venomous spittle. Turning her back on the evil man, she threw the door open and marched into the dark sitting room.
Behind her the Baron added, “At least we agree on that.”
The door closed again, leaving her in blackness. She could hear them, in the next room.
Yanking on her hair, she screamed her pain and frustration. For once it was a real cry, not a honk.
The commotion in the next room stalled and the door opened. Light spilled from the lamps there, over Odette. She remained on her knees, weeping.
“Odile?” Siegfried asked.
Odette lunged for him, murderous rage seizing her again. She knocked him flat, something she couldn’t have done except that she caught him off-guard.
Taking hold of her wrists, he stopped her clawing him and rolled her over so he could pin her to the floor.
“Odile, what is it?”
A gasp from the bed preceded a flutter of feathers. Odette only caught a glimpse of the bird flying out the window. How did she do that?
In her surprise, she stopped fighting Siegfried. He stretched over her, keeping her wrists down, and kissed down her neck.
“Mm, a mask. Shall I pretend you are not my wife?”
Odette choked on tears. What cruel irony. Even mistaken for his wife, he wouldn’t treat her as one.

Be sure to hop around to all the other teases!

One night of passion
Clara Hervaux wants to go back to New Orleans and celebrate Halloween with Marcel at Club Desire. But things are complicated now that the movie star is the target of some crazy fan who’s been threatening her. How can she ditch the bodyguards that follow her around? Is it safe to go there alone? Will she be able to keep her escapades at the club as a secret? Or will she disappoint her favorite ghost and fail to spend Halloween night with him this year?
Sprawled on a big, soft couch, I was reading some kinky novel in the library, my favorite room of the house. Henry stormed in and threw a bunch of sheets of paper on my lap. They were covered in words and letters cut-out from magazines and newspapers, which made them look like something out of an old-fashioned, film noir flick. You know, those classic black and white films where some Bogart-looking actor plays an anti-hero, usually a cynical private detective. He’s approached by a mysterious femme fatale who wishes to hire him either to find out who’s after her or to help her get rid of someone.
“What’s that, sweetie? The studio head’s idea of a clever pitch for a remake? Or did the printer break down?”
“Very funny, Clara. They’re the letters I’ve told you about. There’s a new one every day. Sometimes two. We should go to the police.”
“Nonsense! Forget about them.”
“I can’t. You’re in danger.”
“You’re overreacting. I’m not in danger. Throw them away. Burn them. I don’t care what you do, just get rid of these letters. They don’t mean anything.”
“But, they say they’ll take you away. They go into a lot of details about what they’ll do to you once they get you. I must confess I have nightmares about some of them. We can’t sit on our hands and do nothing.”
I grabbed a few of them, skimmed them over and showed them to my overzealous assistant.
“Here, darling, look. They say they’ll teach me a lesson because I’m a slut who ruined George Clooney’s marriage. You know I didn’t wreck George’s marriage in real life. My character had an affair with his character in a damn movie. Why would I worry about these letters, for crying out loud? They’re a load of crap.”
“Because whoever is writing them is clearly insane, that’s why. There’s no need to be afraid of mentally healthy people.”
I petted the couch beside me. After hesitating for a couple of seconds, Henry sat beside me and I ran a hand over his muscled thigh.
“Relax, will you?” I kept stroking his leg as I spoke softly in his ear. “I’m not afraid of this lunatic. I don’t want to lose my precious freedom over something so ridiculous. And that’s what’s going to happen if Peter finds out about these threats, you know.”
I kissed his neck before tracing his ear with the tip of my tongue. He shivered, but went on talking, although his voice sounded throaty.
“As your manager, that is his job. Besides, I saw somebody following us in a tinted-glass SUV the other day.”
Henry’s breath was choppy by then, which was an excellent sign, since I had been trailing soft, open-mouthed kisses up and down his neck, along his tightly set jaw. I nibbled his earlobe while he stroked my inner thigh, under my short skirt, until he reached its top.

#CimmerianShade ~ Angelica Dawson @angelicadawson #Witch #ghost #Salem #lovespell #reincarnation #newadult #witchtrial

Today's featured author is me! Angelica Dawson.

1.   When did you start writing?
In Grade Six, as our final assignment, I outlined a three part play and wrote several chapter stories. I set the pen aside after University, though, and returned to it in 2010. Since then I haven’t taken more than a few months off.

2.   What makes your stories unique?
I like the flaws in my characters. There’s something to me that rings true when someone slurs their esses or eats sloppy or can’t seem to not drop things.

3.   Is there a common thread that runs through your books?
I have written in many genres and worlds, so I don’t know that there is one. Often they have Happy For Now endings. I believe stories don’t end, they just continue off the page.

4.   If money was of no concern, what would you envision as your perfect lifestyle?
I’d love to live somewhere secluded with a good internet connection. That way I could enjoy wilderness and still feed my writing and reading goals.

5.   Besides writing, what things are you most passionate about?
I’m an environmental consultant, a botanist specifically, so I’m passionate about the damage we are doing to our world and how ecosystems and communities will be able to adapt. I’m also passionate about my daughter. She is my world most days.

Is her true love in her shadow?

Magic just became real for Paige Brown. Since she helped her roommate cast a spell, she has wanted to explore her new-found talent. Flashback to her ancestor give her clues, specifically to a love spell that she hopes will snag the professor she has been fantasizing about. Both Paige and her previous incarnation, Jane, fine that controlling magic is more than a simple recipe. Will Paige be able to break her own spell? Will she discover the love that is closer than she knows?
Summer dug in the garden, pulling weeds from desirable flowers and herbs. It was a slow and tedious task, but the sun warmed her arms and neck, prohibiting any ideas of going inside. Gwen and Paige were both on campus for differing reasons. Summer jealously held onto her weekends and refused to let anything from school invade them. Well, anything but the assignments that couldn’t be put off.
It still shocked her that she knew the names of so many of the plants. Her parents lived in an apartment, so they kept a few flowers in pots. Somehow she knew not only what each of the ones here were, but what Mary used them for. The dreams grew more vivid and detailed. She wouldn’t claim to be a witch, but she was glad to know a few teas, like chamomile, that helped to calm nerves and ease minds. Those would be very useful when she found a job.
Summer froze, her trowel still an inch above the bed. “How did you get out here?” she asked the air. There was no mistaking that presence. She still didn’t know who he had been, but after a month it seemed obvious to her that he was masculine. Something in his bearing, which she couldn’t see, and his stature gave the impression he was taller than her.
There was no answer, but a breeze rustled the leaves and the ghost sat next to her on the ledge.
“I refuse to be put off by you. You can haunt the house all you like. I’m not going anywhere. This is my family’s house. Who are you to haunt it anyway?”
It occurred to her that he might be a distant ancestor. Aunt Marge said no one had reported the house as haunted and that there was no record of a death in the house. Even Mary, tried as a witch, died in the square, not the house.
The ghost didn’t answer, but he did leave, not before touching her arm and making her shiver. Upstairs, washing the soil off her hands, he returned. It had become less oppressive all the time, and she was actually getting used to him, dammit.
She had the sense he was looking at her in the mirror. It felt like hands slipped around her waist, and she tipped her head to the side. Goosebumps flooded her skin and she could have sworn he kissed her neck. Shuddering, she leaned forward, gripping her vanity.
“Whoa. I don’t think I’m ready for a frisky ghost. Tell you what, you don’t do that again and I won’t try to push you away.”
There was no way of gauging his response, but he didn’t grab her again. Instead he brushed her hand, something she thought she could get used to in time.
