I ran, lost and stumbling through the woods. Roots seemed to
jump out of the ground and grab my toes and ankles. Every time I fell, I jumped
back up. My skirt was torn and my knees bloodied, but still I ran, unable to
find the way out. One crash knocked the wind out of me and I looked into the
leaves as I pushed myself up.
Light glimmered despite the overcast sky and canopy of
trees. Something shone just under the twigs and dirt. I paused, despite my
heart thudding loudly in my chest and my panting breath.
I pulled it free, finding a mirror. I brushed at it,
cleaning the debris away. I heard growls and hoots, the beasts chasing me. They
were getting closer. I couldn’t keep running.
My gaze fell on the glass in my hands. The reflection was
odd. I was there, and some of the trees, but not nearly enough of them.
Turning, holding the mirror out, I saw a different forest behind me. Just as I
faced my pursuers, I saw a cabin. Looking over my shoulder showed more forest,
but I walked slowly backwards until I closed my hand on the handle.
