Jerry held tightly to Anna. Her body was already cold and
his was stiffening, the chilly water freezing them in place, freezing them
together.
“I love you, Anna,” he murmured into her hair, touching his
lips to her head one last time.
The flood had come quickly, unexpectedly. Their tiny skiff
had sunk from beneath them, leaving them floating on what remained of their mattress
until it became water-logged and sank as well. Now they were unable to move,
waiting for the last breaths to leave them. Jerry felt hers, chill across his
chest. His own wouldn’t be far behind.
